McAuliffe Art Start
Welcome to McAuliffe Art Start! Our goal is to encourage creativity, spark imaginations and explore the amazing world of art.
The Art Start program is a valuable part of education at Christa McAuliffe. It is guided and taught by passionate and caring parent volunteers. Art helps students think creatively, understand new concepts and vocabulary, and introduces students to a variety of mediums, artists, cultures, and time periods. Visual arts connect students more deeply to the world and opens them to new ways of seeing. Plus, it is a lot of fun and allows them the opportunity to realize their creative potential. Browse the pages below to get familiar with the McAuliffe Art Start Program.
No experience is necessary to volunteer for Art Start and an art background is certainly not needed. Art Start is typically taught once per month in each McAuliffe classroom. The day and time of Art Start lessons are determined with McAuliffe teachers. The lessons conducted by Art Start volunteers are based on elements of art such as line, value, texture, form, space, color, and shape. For their art lessons, volunteer art teachers are encouraged to reference a work of art, historical time period, or specific subject matter currently being studied in class.
Elements of art can be highlighted in any creative work. There are so many amazing artists to discuss and get kids jazzed about art. Just to name a few, contemporary artist Dale Chihuly or classics such as Picasso and Salvador Dali are fun, interesting and result in amazing creativity from our students.
Our hope is that our Art Start program inspires our kids to learn collaboratively and individually, to discover their own styles and truly believe they can create something amazing! McAuliffe Art Start offers a means to get involved with your child's education, and be present in the classroom in a fun and creative way.

Why is Art Education Important? |

Some common misconceptions of art education are that it is an extracurricular activity lacking serious academic dimension and depth, it is lovely but non-essential, or it is just doing crafts. Funding for art education throughout the United States has been cut by school districts because they are non-tested subjects. What is so often overlooked is that a comprehensive education in the arts is what makes students more dimensional in their understanding and their thinking, as it encourages students to also think creatively. Studies indicate that students tend to problem-solve in creative terms rather than storing and retrieving knowledge. Research has also proven that the study of arts has a direct correlation to improved social and emotional development.

The Art Start program at McAuliffe is partially funded through the McAuliffe PTSA and partially funded through the Art Start fundraiser Square 1. These funds go to purchasing the much needed supplies and resources used for weekly art lessons. Supplies such as clay, paints, paper, brushes and glue are purchased with these funds.
