McAuliffe PTSA Recognized by Washington State PTA
The Washington State PTA Board of Directors has established state awards to recognize organizations for their efforts and accomplishments in promoting the well-being and education of children in the state of Washington. Each year Washington State PTA recognizes outstanding membership recruiting efforts to encourage membership enrollment early and throughout the year.
Our PTSA is a recipient of the Gold Level Membership award! This award is presented to PTSAs who achieved a 10% increase of the previous year’s membership.
Every year, the PTSA strives to reach a membership goal of 100%; this means for every student at McAuliffe, there is a parent PTSA member. For the past five years, the McAuliffe PTSA has achieved 100% Membership. In 2014-2015, only four PTSA units in the entire LWSD achieved this status.
Thank you for being a member of our PTSA, which supports not only our school, but our state and National PTA programs as well.
(April 2015) The Washington State PTA awarded McAuliffe's PTSA for the following outstanding achievements during 2014-2015:
(May 2016) The Washington State PTA awarded McAuliffe's PTSA for 100% Membership Award for a first consecutive year. Thank you to all our members and supporters who make our PTSA awesome!

How will WA State Pay for Our Kids' Education?
What education funding models are they talking about in Olympia right now? What are the benefits and challenges of the "prototypical school" model our state currently uses? What are the benefits and challenges of "student-centered" approaches, like the one recently proposed in our WA State Senate?
Come find out on March 2 at the LWSD Resource Center!
EVERYONE IS WELCOME!
Because PTA is a nonpartisan organization, this will be a nonpartisan, educational event.

February 17 Marks First Major Deadline for Bills
From WSPTA Blogspot
In the second week of February, the House Appropriations Committee held a public hearing on the two competing education funding proposals: SSB 5607 (Senate Republicans) and HB 1843 (House Democrats). The bills drew more than two hours’ worth of testimony, most of it mixed on both spending plans, although the support for HB 1843 outweighed that of SSB 5607.
Read the full details here.
Friday, February 17th marks the first of many deadlines the Legislature uses to winnow the number of bills they consider. By Friday, policy bills must have passed out of committee to a budget committee or to the Rules committee to stay under consideration. This deadline will be followed by February 24th, which is the cutoff for bills with a fiscal impact (to the state) to be considered.
Status of Top Five Legislative Priorities - Update
1. Social and Emotional Learning - The bill that would embed SEL throughout the calendar year is up for public hearing Monday.
2. Amply Funding Basic Education - The House Appropriations Committee passed SHB 1823 (see above).
3. Closing the Opportunity Gap - No new bills introduced
4. Standards for Paraeducators - SHB 1115 was voted out of House Education as a substitute, replacing requirements for certification and endorsements with training and standards for all para-educators, and standards for para-educators who are in classrooms with students with special needs and ELL students.
5. Breakfast after the Bell - SB 5696 is the Senate version of the Breakfast after the Bell bill. It is scheduled for public hearing Thursday, February 16 at 1:30 in the Senate education committee.

The National PTA comprises millions of families, students, teachers, administrators, and business and community leaders devoted to the educational success of children and the promotion of family engagement in schools. PTA is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit association that prides itself on being a powerful voice for all children, a relevant resource for families and communities, and a strong advocate for public education.
The United States Secretary of Education is the head of the U.S. Department of Education. The Secretary advises the President on federal policies, programs, and activities related to education in the United States. This Secretary deals with federal influence over education policy, and heads the U.S. Department of Education.
This important role impacts our schools nationwide. Read the National PTA's statement on the confirmation of our new Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos here.
Old Laws Are Putting Your Child's Privacy at Risk
Our children's data is no longer stored in a locked office at the school. Their grades, disciplinary record, schoolwork, home address, email address, etc. are now stored on a computer or in a data bank somewhere, and the software on which our children's important information is stored is not always owned by the school district. Welcome to a new reality about technology use in our schools and how our students' data is (or isn't) protected.
