Lake Washington School District is growing, by the equivalent of one elementary school a year for the next five years. The district has looked at alternatives to house this boom in student population and made two decisions, effective with the 2012-13 school year, to use its current school building space more efficiently. These two decisions, announced at the school board meeting on May 3, include changing its school grade configuration and shifting the junior high schools into which three elementary schools feed (Audubon Elementary, Bell Elementary, and Einstein Elementary Schools).
The majority of the district's growth over the next five to seven years will occur at the elementary school level. Moving from a grades K-6 elementary, 7-9 junior high and 10-12 high school system to a K-5 elementary, 6-8 middle school and 9-12 high school will shift one grade out of the elementary schools where space is already tight and move the population to the secondary schools, where more space is available.
While these changes will enable the district to use existing space more efficiently, there will still be a space problem at the high school level. The district plans public meetings for next fall to determine which of several options to select to address the remaining space issues.
Dr. Chip Kimball, superintendent, expressed his intent last spring to move toward a change in school grade configuration for academic reasons. He is concerned that ninth graders in the district's grades 7-9 junior high schools often do not fully recognize, despite admonitions from parents and teachers, that their high school transcript for graduation and college admissions purposes begins in ninth grade. Read more.
You can also see more on the school changes for 2012-2013 by visiting the new School Changes 2012-2013 section of the district web site.

McAuliffe Elementary won the 14th place team trophy for the 4th - 6th grade section at the recent Washington State Chess Championship. Approximately 65 schools were represented at the tournament held Saturday, April 24, 2010 in Tacoma, with about 1200 students participating from around the state. Washington has the highest attendance out of all 50 state elementary school chess championships, so this is quite an accomplishment.
Six McAuliffe students attended the tournament.
Emanuel Chang won the 13th place trophy (out of 249 participants) in the 3rd grade section for winning four of his five games.
In the 4th grade section, Pratik Padhi received the 28th place trophy with a score of 4.0 out of 5.0; Suhas Surendran took home the 86th place trophy for winning three of his matches; Luke Wall received a trophy for winning 3 games to put him in 93rd place; and Thomas Dulski finished in 129th place (out of 224 participants) with a score a 2.0.
Evangeline Chang came in 12th in the 5th grade section and was honored with the 12th place trophy (out of 209 participants) for winning four of her matches.
Congratulations to these McAuliffe students for their impressive successes at the State Chess Championship!

under President's Note
The McAuliffe PTSA is proud to be the recepient of three state level PTA awards announced at the Washington State PTA Conference on May 1, 2010.
Communications Awards
Communication awards identify and recognize all forms of effective communication from PTAs to PTA members and the community about programs, projects, activities, and issues affecting children. These awards are not limited to any specific medium and may include web sites, email, voice mail, public access television, communication through/with partners, and more.
McAuliffe received First Place in Electronic Communications and Third Place in Paper Communications. Thank you and congratulations go out to Susannah Pryal, your McAuliffe PTSA Communications VP, who assembled the entry along with her fabulous team, LeAnne Wilson, Briana Martin, Kristin Heffley and Mike Adams.
Honor Unit Award
An Honor Unit is a PTA/PTSA local unit which has, in its service to children, gone significantly beyond the attainment of standards of excellence and has demonstrated the kind of exceptional qualities that merit replication by others. A local unit must apply and go through a competitive judging process to be an Honor Unit. Honor Units will be announced and recognized at the State PTA convention.
McAuliffe PTSA received Honorable Mention in this category. Many thanks to Jane Dulski, your McAuliffe PTSA Co-President, for preparing the entry (which was a few hundred pages!) and congratulations all the PTSA members and volunteers that offer their time and efforts to our wonderful PTSA!
