Reflections and Thanks from the PTSA Co-Presidents

As our term as Co-Presidents come to close, we can't help but reflect. This has been an amazing and fun-filled year.

In addition to continuing our traditional programs, we have added several new PTSA-sponsored activities.

We started off the year with a Fun Run that not only promoted exercise, but helped raise money to support the many PTSA programs and activities.

The reintroduction of Parent Education benefited many families with the offering of a Love and Logic class and a Bullying Prevention seminar.

The Bicycle Safety Rodeo was a success despite the unseasonable weather.

With tremendous success, we held our first annual International Night. With so much cultural diversity represented at our school, we enjoyed the sharing and learning about our traditions, heritage and food.

The PTSA could not launch all these and all of our other wonderful programs without the support of our amazing parents and staff. Our thanks can never be enough – but let us try!

Thank you to the teachers and staff for challenging and nurturing our children every day.

Thank you to the volunteers (parents, older siblings, grandparents and friends) who give of themselves for the benefit of all our children.

We can't forget to thank our PTSA Board of Directors and our Teacher Representatives, Gail Viamonte and Pearl Kleinberger. Our PTSA Board has been diligently working behind the scenes all year and is the backbone of the PTSA. Thank you to all this year's Board members for the countless hours you have committed to benefit all of the McAuliffe community.

Thank you to Mr. Steve Mezich for the time that he gave to our children and the support that he gave to Mrs. Miller. We are sorry to see him go and wish him well on his next assignment in the district.

Finally, we would like to acknowledge our principal, Mrs. Tracey Miller, for her dedicated service to McAuliffe. Her unconditional support of the McAuliffe staff and the PTSA has been pivotal in all our successes. Tracey has been a great asset to McAuliffe and the community. Her cheerful personality will be missed at McAuliffe. We look forward to her visits at McAuliffe in the years to come.

It is with sweet sadness and great pride that we finish out the year and hand over the positions of Co-President to Jennifer Mackleit and April Weise. They will continue, with the rest of next year's elected Board, to enthusiastically serve the McAuliffe Community.

Thank you for all your support and a great 2009-2010 school year!

ENJOY YOUR SUMMER!

Our dedicated McAuliffe volunteers were honored at the annual Volunteer Tea on Wednesday, June 2.

Thank you to Mrs. Herd's, Mr. Kendall's and Mrs. Weaver's classes who provided entertainment (and Mrs. Warren). Thank you to Mrs. Herd and the teachers who provided the amazing food – including a chocolate waterfall!

Thank you to Krista Wall for the invitations, to Gigi Predmore for coordinating, and to Traci DiStasio and Jill Corriveau who helped set-up. Thank you to the Awards Committee: Jeff Wall, Tammy Penarczyk and Jane Dulski.

Thank you to the students and Girl Scouts who provided babysitting: Chloe Predmore, Dominique Alvarado-Holden, Ellie Smith, Ellie Viotto, Emily Wallace, Emma Santos, Kellie Hannigan, Megan O'Meara, Natalie LaTurner, Ryan Hammack, Sam Vidos, Sophie Mackinnon, Sun Sun Venugopal, Sofia Viotto and Vivian Wiese.

Thanks to our adult childcare advisors, Elena Biongianni, Randy Hammack, Steve Wiese, (and to April Wiese for her oversight and coordination). Also, thank you to Jim Kendall and Gail Viamonte for letting us use their rooms for the childcare.

Lastly, we would like to thank Mikara Tim and Liviu Voinea, our wonderful school custodians, who helped us get everything set-up in a very short amount of time.

Three awards were presented this year – Outstanding Educator, the Golden Acorn and the Shining Star. Our always giving Principal, Mrs. Tracey Miller, was awarded the Outstanding Educator. Traci DiStasio was awarded the Golden Acorn, and Gigi Predmore was awarded the Shining Star. The Outstanding Educator is a WA State PTA award to recognize individuals who go beyond the normal expectations of their jobs to make the learning environment fun, beneficial and challenging. The Golden Acorn is also a state award and recognizes a volunteer who has given outstanding service to all children in the school community. The Shining Star is a McAuliffe award to recognize a past Golden Acorn award recipient who has continued to go above and beyond in their service to our children and community. We are all inspired by the three award winning ladies.

The PTSA would also like to recognize the following people who were also nominated for the Golden Acorn: Susan Simon, Roslynn Marks, Whitney King, Jennifer Mackleit, Lisa Carskaden, Kristen Wisegarver, Valerie Orloff, Liza Wallace, April Wiese, Laura Bolz, Kristen Mathison, Sarah Atkinson, and Jane Dulski. Congratulations to you all!

Lake Washington News: School Changes 2012-2013

Lake Washington School District is growing, by the equivalent of one elementary school a year for the next five years. The district has looked at alternatives to house this boom in student population and made two decisions, effective with the 2012-13 school year, to use its current school building space more efficiently. These two decisions, announced at the school board meeting on May 3, include changing its school grade configuration and shifting the junior high schools into which three elementary schools feed (Audubon Elementary, Bell Elementary, and Einstein Elementary Schools).

The majority of the district's growth over the next five to seven years will occur at the elementary school level. Moving from a grades K-6 elementary, 7-9 junior high and 10-12 high school system to a K-5 elementary, 6-8 middle school and 9-12 high school will shift one grade out of the elementary schools where space is already tight and move the population to the secondary schools, where more space is available.

While these changes will enable the district to use existing space more efficiently, there will still be a space problem at the high school level. The district plans public meetings for next fall to determine which of several options to select to address the remaining space issues.

Dr. Chip Kimball, superintendent, expressed his intent last spring to move toward a change in school grade configuration for academic reasons. He is concerned that ninth graders in the district's grades 7-9 junior high schools often do not fully recognize, despite admonitions from parents and teachers, that their high school transcript for graduation and college admissions purposes begins in ninth grade. Read more.

Impressive Washington State Chess Championship Results by McAuliffe Students

McAuliffe Elementary won the 14th place team trophy for the 4th - 6th grade section at the recent Washington State Chess Championship. Approximately 65 schools were represented at the tournament held Saturday, April 24, 2010 in Tacoma, with about 1200 students participating from around the state. Washington has the highest attendance out of all 50 state elementary school chess championships, so this is quite an accomplishment.

Six McAuliffe students attended the tournament.

Emanuel Chang won the 13th place trophy (out of 249 participants) in the 3rd grade section for winning four of his five games.

In the 4th grade section, Pratik Padhi received the 28th place trophy with a score of 4.0 out of 5.0; Suhas Surendran took home the 86th place trophy for winning three of his matches; Luke Wall received a trophy for winning 3 games to put him in 93rd place; and Thomas Dulski finished in 129th place (out of 224 participants) with a score a 2.0.

Evangeline Chang came in 12th in the 5th grade section and was honored with the 12th place trophy (out of 209 participants) for winning four of her matches.

Congratulations to these McAuliffe students for their impressive successes at the State Chess Championship!

Communications Awards

Communication awards identify and recognize all forms of effective communication from PTAs to PTA members and the community about programs, projects, activities, and issues affecting children. These awards are not limited to any specific medium and may include web sites, email, voice mail, public access television, communication through/with partners, and more.

McAuliffe received First Place in Electronic Communications and Third Place in Paper Communications. Thank you and congratulations go out to Susannah Pryal, your McAuliffe PTSA Communications VP, who assembled the entry along with her fabulous team, LeAnne Wilson, Briana Martin, Kristin Heffley and Mike Adams.

Honor Unit Award

An Honor Unit is a PTA/PTSA local unit which has, in its service to children, gone significantly beyond the attainment of standards of excellence and has demonstrated the kind of exceptional qualities that merit replication by others. A local unit must apply and go through a competitive judging process to be an Honor Unit. Honor Units will be announced and recognized at the State PTA convention.

McAuliffe PTSA received Honorable Mention in this category. Many thanks to Jane Dulski, your McAuliffe PTSA Co-President, for preparing the entry (which was a few hundred pages!) and congratulations all the PTSA members and volunteers that offer their time and efforts to our wonderful PTSA!

Bullying is NOT Okay

A Message from Kevin Teeley, President, Lake Washington Education Association.

Bullying is NOT Okay

Bullying is when one child or a group of children repeatedly picks on another child – often one who is seen as weaker and more vulnerable. Bullying can be about any real or imagined difference a child might have and is different from fighting and teasing. What makes it different is the way the bully repeatedly shows power over the other child. Bullies try to control other children by using scare tactics. Being controlled and repeatedly picked on can make your child a victim.

Girls, as well as boys, can be involved in bullying. The child will pick on other children by teasing, threatening, or attacking them repeatedly. Some will also exclude their victims from activities or start rumors about them.

Bullying often happens at school – in the halls, at lunch, while on the playground – especially when no adult is supervising. It can also occur traveling to and from school or in the neighborhood.

Bullies often pick on children who make them feel powerful by acting very emotional or giving in.

To stop bullying, adults must step in and take a stand against it. Children need and want the help of trusted adults in dealing with bullying. Don't wait until children are teens. Intervening at an early age prevents more severe bullying later on. Talk to your kids about bullying even if you don't think they are victims, bullies, or bystanders.

Remember, simply by asking your children about bullying, you are protecting them. Ask how things are going at school and what they think of the other kids in their classes. Ask if anyone gets picked on or bullied. Be aware that some kids who are bullied will fear going to school or develop symptoms of asthma, stomach pains, or other illness.

For more information, we encourage you to go to the NEA website and type Bullying in the search box.

Thank you to all who attended the Sammamish Plateau Chess Tournament here at McAuliffe on March 26, 2010. Our Chess Club sold pizza and other concessions to the hungry participants and raised approximately $220 which has been allocated to a scholarship fund for the McAuliffe Chess Club.

The Eastlake High School Relay for Life (Team Drew lead by Nicole McKernan) also raised funds through a bake sale held at the tournament. Their sale of home-made treats raised about $70 for the American Cancer Society. Go to www.relayforlife.org for more information on this upcoming event (to be held May 22nd) and to make a contribution to their team.

Thanks again for the generous support from all who purchased food at the chess tournament.
