President's Message
Approaching the End of the Year
I enjoy reflecting over the school year as we approach June and the end of school. I hope that the PTSA sponsored events have enriched your childrens’ educational experience and that you and your children have felt a part of the McAuliffe Community. One of the most important ways that we support the school financially is by granting money to the school for specific academics and supplies. As of May 12, we have granted $28,649 to McAuliffe Elementary and the Lake Washington School District. This money goes to support teacher stipends, Accelerated Reading and literacy, Art Start, school assemblies, classroom grants, equipment leases, and field trips. The two largest budgeted items are the classroom grants to the teachers ($7,400) and field trips ($5,250). The teacher grants help subsidize supplies and resources for the teachers--things that they would otherwise pay out of pocket. The field trip money directly helps offset the cost to each of us when our children take trips which compliment their learning.  Next year’s school district proposed budget cuts make the PTSA’s support for these items all the more important. Thank you for your continued support of PTSA fundraising allows us to fund these items!

PTSA Donates $2000 for Production
Where Does All That Money Go?
Our PTSA has contributed $2,000 for production to the school for a number of years. Since the PTSA has made a conscience effort to minimize the amount of paper that we send in your child’s Payload Packet, we asked our McAuliffe Office Manager, Lisa Lovin, “Where does it go and do we need to keep it in our PTSA budget?” Here’s what she had to report:  Money from the district is provided on a per student basis. Because our school population decreased, McAuliffe’s budget declined from $21,500 in 07/08 to $16,500 for the current year (08/09). The $2,000 granted by the PTSA helps to purchase paper, toner, school supplies, construction paper, roll poster paper, laminating film, poster board, art supplies, health room supplies and office supplies. The $2,000 we grant makes a difference. To quote Ms. Lovin directly: “I hope this conveys McAuliffe’s gratitude for your donation and how we use the funds.”  The PTSA voted to continue this $2,000 allocation for production purchases for next year.

Volunteer Highlight
Yearbook Chair, Lisa Carskaden
by Denise Stephens
Making Memories

“Say cheese!”

By the end of this year, Lisa Carskaden will have said that phrase, or something like it, at least a thousand times. As chairperson for the McAuliffe yearbook, a PTSA-supported project, kids throughout McAuliffe know Lisa as the mom with the camera permanently attached to her hands.

“Taking pictures of the kids is my favorite part of this job,” Lisa exclaimed. “They love having their pictures taken. Their personalities really shine in front of a camera.  Watching them leaf through the yearbook for the first time, it's really exciting! And I love knowing that the kids will look through these books over and over again, reliving those special moments at McAuliffe.”

Lisa has helped with the Yearbook in prior years but this is the first time she’s been the committee chair responsible for producing it.

“There was a need for a Yearbook Chair this year and since I've had previous experience with working on the yearbook, I thought I'd give it a shot,” Lisa explained. “It turns out that time management is the biggest challenge of the position. There are many responsibilities and it requires a year-long commitment in order to capture all of the highlights of the school year.

“I research potential publishers, create portrait and activity pages for the yearbook, do sales and marketing, and am responsible for the distribution of the yearbooks,” she continued. “But I want to clarify that many people have contributed to the success of the yearbook, including our yearbook committee volunteers and our wonderful McAuliffe staff members.”

Yearbook is not all that Lisa has been involved with over the years. She has volunteered her time on a variety of committees, including Family Dance, Book Rodeo, 6th Grade Promotion and Field Day. She also likes working in the classroom.

As you page through the yearbook when it arrives, you’ll be able to spot Lisa’s darling son James, age 10. He is in Mrs. Softli’s fourth grade class. Anna, a 13-year-old at Inglewood, and husband, Jay, round out the active family. Jay is a mechanical engineer for Boeing whom Lisa described as “being so much more: a caring, fun loving and helpful husband and father and a great cook, too!”
